All apples are not the same: SIG’s filling flexibility eases market entry with ‘favourite apples’

People who like wine usually develop a preference for a particular grape variety. A similar thing could soon happen with juice drinkers: ‘variety’ is the current catchword for fruit juice specialists such as Amecke GmbH & Co. KG and the Maspex Group with their brand Tymbark. Because all apples are not the same. Both companies are bringing out juices made from specific varieties, to cater to the tastes of discerning consumers and encourage them to drink juice.

26.07.2016: New drinksplus products from Dr. Chung’s Food in Korea

New drinksplus products from Dr. Chung’s Food in Korea

Dr. Chung’s Food has taken the lead in South Korea. At the end of 2014, under the brand name ‘Vegemil’ the Korean beverage specialist brought out a product innovation: UHT soy beverages with applemango juice, containing healthy, natural bits of nata de coco and peach as special extras. Especially among the younger generation this product – which combines added value and fun by adding chewy fruit particulates to the healthy soy drink – is gaining in popularity. Due to the product’s good market performance, the company has now added another two beverages containing particulates to its product range: a UHT soy drink with muesli, and a UHT coconut drink with nata de coco. The products are made possible using the drinksplus solution from SIG Combibloc.

Individual solutions: SIG Combibloc qualifies downstream equipment from Mariani

With Italian downstream manufacturer Mariani, SIG Combibloc now has an additional partner to enable it to offer complete solutions for food and beverage industry customers – from the filling machine right up to the palletising. For SIG Combibloc, a smooth production process does not end after the filling machine or the applicator. Without the corresponding downstream equipment that can keep pace with production, a technologically brilliant, fast filling machine is virtually worthless. To enable customers from the food and beverage industry to utilise the potential of the SIG Combibloc filling machines, the process must continue reliably beyond the filling process.

Sustainability goal achieved: from August, 100 % of SIG carton packs can be labelled with the FSCTM logo

This means SIG Combibloc can guarantee that, starting from August 2016, sufficient quantities of wood from FSCTM-certified, responsibly managed forests have been bought for the manufacture of the unprocessed cardboard, so that every customer across the world can bring to market SIG carton packs with the FSCTM label, now and in future. ...

Oasis NutriSolution – ‘Hydra+’ special-purpose food in carton packs

Even special-purpose foods are safely packaged in aseptic carton packs. Canadian food manufacturer Lassonde has therefore opted for recloseable carton packs from SIG Combibloc with combiSwift screw cap when expanding its product range with “Oasis NutriSolution Hydra+” for people with difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). People who have difficulty swallowing as a result of certain illnesses tend to take in too little fluid, because conventional beverages cause them particular problems: they flow too fast and are difficult to control in the mouth. This creates a risk of choking. In this regard, thickened liquids with a smooth, homogenous consistency, which can therefore be swallowed more easily and in a more controlled way, can be helpful for people with dysphagia. Changing the consistency makes the liquids easier to swallow.

Lupin drinks: CO2 bonus for product and packaging

With their white-flowering umbels, not only are Sweet Blue Lupins pretty to look at, but right now they are also attracting the interest of the food industry. Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) in Freising, Germany, and Prolupin have found a way to produce the unique, purely herbal lupin protein isolate (LPI), which is similar to animal proteins, from lupin seeds. The researchers received the Deutsche Zukunftspreis 2014 (the Federal President’s award for technology and innovation) for this innovative process. On the European market, the high protein content of lupins could make the plant a climate-friendly and GMO-free alternative to soy beans imported from Asia and South America. In Germany, the first lupin drinks are now available in aseptic carton packs from SIG Combibloc, under the umbrella brand MADE WITH LUVE.

Energy without caffeine: malt beverages with lots of power

In the soft drink and milk drink sector, there are currently two trends that food manufacturers simply cannot ignore: as far as possible, beverages should be made 100 per cent from natural ingredients, and they should contain no added sugar. Against this background, malt beverages promise plenty of potential, because the products are in line with both trends. Especially in the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, malt beverages are very popular. Malt can be used creatively in a huge variety of product formulations. So malt beverages can be positioned very widely.

Increasingly, it is now hand-crafted and custom-made speciality beverages such as artisanal smoothies, lemonades, speciality coffee and tea drinks, or even hand-crafted soda, that are proving to be high-margin menu add-ons. Speciality beverages such as these can increase traffic and boost profits, if the programme is properly executed. How aseptic carton packs can revitalize the tomato industry. White paper to download: Why the U.S. canned tomato market requires a bold change

Canned tomatoes are currently facing hard times on the US market. As a consumer commodity which at present is sold mainly in food metal cans, long-life tomato products belong to a product segment which so far has generated a large number of very similar, poorly differentiated products, and very few premium products. That could be set to change. In a white paper, SIG Combibloc is highlighting why the US market for canned tomato requires a bold change, and how carton packs can help refresh the US market for long-life tomato products and breathe new life into it.
