SIG Combibloc launches combisafe to the global food markets

February 2007. Liquid foodstuffs such as milk and juices are among the products that have traditionally been packed to best advantage in beverage cartons. But SIG Combibloc was also quick off the mark to think about new applications for carton packaging, to open more market opportunities for the food industry.

Now, to serve our customers ever better – and to extend the possibilities for cardboard packaging – we have developed combisafe. Now combisafe makes it possible to fill cartons with particularly chunky products, such as fruit and vegetables, pre-prepared food or stews.

The new system builds on the tried-and-tested basic packaging system from SIG Combibloc. The heat-resistant cardboard foundation makes it possible for combisafe cartons to be heat-treated in an autoclave after the filling process, so that the final product is completely sterilized and has a long shelf life.

combisafe offers a wide range of benefits for the consumer. The new cartons feature perforation for convenient opening, making combisafe safe and easy to handle, open and empty. Using combisafe is literally child’s play. After the carton has been opened, the top can be easily folded back again – ensuring the best possible protection for the rest of the product, and preventing odours from developing in the refrigerator. Broken glass is no longer an issue, because combisafe is made from robust carton that can be transported without any danger of breakage. What is more, the lightness of combisafe means that you are transporting the weight of the contents, not the packaging. The simple, user-friendly handling features of combisafe reflect its up-to-the-minute character, making glass and cans outdated.

As the first customer who apply combisafe, Juetro is a canning food company in Germany with 90 years’ tradition. The current portfolio of Juetro includes several hundred categories such as vegetables, fruits, meat & poultry, seafood and frozen products. With daily production of 300,000 to 400,000 cans, Juetro covers all the sales channels in Germany. Attracted by the technology provided by SIG Combibloc which can not only fill chunky ingredients, but has volume flexibility, Juetro has decided to firstly use combisafe 400 ml to pack the flavored food category. The next step is to extend its product line to the vegetable category. The first patch of its products packed in combisafe will launch to the market in the second half of 2007.

Meanwhile, the partnership with the second global user of combisafe - La Doria S.p.A. which is a leading Italian manufacturer of canned food is under way. This company will use combisafe to pack its dried beans, pasta, tomato sauces and vegetable food.
