SIG Combibloc donates RMB 800,000 for earthquake relief in China

May 2008. At 14:28 May 12, 2008, an 8-magnitude earthquake ravaged Wenchuan, Sichuan Province of China. In the quake-hit areas, houses and buildings collapsed, villages were swallowed by the mudstone flows, and lives ended in ruins. Facing the unexpected natural disaster, we Chinese held our hands together to help the people suffered in the disaster.

The next day after the earthquake, the HR Department of SIG Combibloc China called for fundraising among employees. In the afternoon, donation boxes appeared in SIG Combibloc’s factories and offices in Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. Employees responded to this activity immediately and made generous contributions. Workers in Suzhou factory brought out their donation of money without hesitation, though they were not in good wealth. What’s more touching, operators who worked overtime for customers’ airdrops to the devastated areas, despite their exhaustion, requested to donate blood for the injured in quake areas.

In only a few days, SIG Combibloc China collected more than RMB 50,000 from the staff. Meanwhile, SIG Group, giving humanistic support at the earliest time, allocated donation from headquarter in Switzerland. In less than one week, SIG Combibloc raised a fund of RMB 800,000. During this period, to meet the special demand of disaster area customers for producing milk and drinks that were in urgent need in quake-affected areas, the front line operators in Suzhou factory were working in full swing every day, in order that the packaging materials they produced could be delivered to the disaster area customers as soon as possible.

On May 30, to express thanks to the charity of SIG Combibloc, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) Charity Federation held a simple yet grand donation ceremony in SIP Administrative Committee. Hua Xuexing, Director of Social Affairs Bureau of SIP Administrative Committee and Deputy Director Lang Juming accepted the donation on behalf of Suzhou Civil Affairs Bureau and handed over a donation certificate to Markus Boehm, CEO of SIG Combibloc China and Rod Steinvorth, Operations Director.

All the donations will be used for emergence rescue and post-disaster reconstruction. SIG Combibloc hopes that the donation will help the victims shake off the shadow of the earthquake and rebuild their homeland soon.
