Renewable raw material for an agreeable climate Beverage cartons produced by SIG Combibloc are based on paperboard, which is made from the renewable raw material wood. Unlike non-renewable fossil resources, the availability of wood is virtually unlimited when sustainable forestry management is practiced. Sustainable forestry management SIG Combibloc is insistent that wood products originate from forests that are sustainably managed. The raw paperboard which is used to make beverage cartons is sourced from Scandinavia, where sustainable forestry management ensures that at least as much new wood is grown as has been felled. In fact, far more wood is being grown than is being consumed. Hence, wood reserves in Scandinavia are increasing steadily. Irreproachable pedigree We require our paperboard suppliers to certify that the cellulose used in their production facilities has been obtained from inspected and managed forestry sources. Consequently, our suppliers have their retraceability systems verified against the international FSC „Chain of Custody“ standards by independent certification bodies. The standards of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) are recognized by international nature conservation agencies. The „Chain of Custody“ concept ensures retraceability of the timber to controlled and appropriate sources. Dual benefits for society Growing trees contribute to an agreeable climate because they extract detrimental carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, filter dust and sulphur from the air and, on top of all that, they also generate oxygen! Hence, sustainably managed forests create multiple benefits for society: they are not only a renewable source of raw material, but also contribute positively to the climate. |
