Decision-making aid for consumers An FSC label on a carton pack does more than just show that the wood fibres used in its manufacture originate from FSC-certified forests or other controlled sources. Particularly in markets in which environmental considerations are sensitive and critical issues, food manufacturers and retailers can make an unequivocal statement of their environmentally and socially responsible beliefs and actions by offering FSC-certified carton packs – and make it easier for the environmentally-conscious consumer to make a purchase decision at point of sale. Globally, the number of consumers who take a responsible attitude to their own consumer behaviour, and who are aware that with their purchase choices they can personally contribute to the success of high-quality, sustainable goods, is on the rise. The ‘Lohas’ movement, for example, which advocates a ‘Lifestyle of health and sustainability’, has a growing body of followers all over the world. Lohas are well-informed and discerning, and as a result they welcome independently verified sustainability that is additionally documented by appropriate, impartial labels. For consumers, the food itself continues to be the key concern, but when making their purchase choices, more and more people are also consciously thinking about the packaging, where it comes from and its effect on the environment. A packaging made predominantly from natural and traceable raw materials fits perfectly with the new environmental consciousness. |
