La Doria expands its product range with combisafe June 2007. “Food takes form” – this is the catchphrase Italy’s La Doria food manufacturer is using to showcase the expansion of its product range using combisafe. The new packaging system from SIG Combibloc is a volume-flexible, heat-resistant carton packaging which makes it possible to fill practically any kind of chunky food product and then sterilise food and carton pack in an autoclave. In the near future, La Doria will be launching chunky tomato products, soups, baked beans and other pulses in combisafe; further on ready to serve meals could also be produced. With combisafe, SIG Combibloc offers the food industry a whole new world of possibilities. Alongside the proven aseptic filling machine system, which packages liquid, pasty and chunky foods such as soups, sauces, tomato products, desserts and baby food in carton packs from SIG Combibloc, combisafe can also be used to package products with large particulates, which are then pasteurised or sterilised in an autoclave. “The new combisafe packaging system appealed to us strongly on a number of levels”, say brothers Antonio Ferraioli, CEO, and Andrea Ferraioli, General Manager of La Doria. “The filling and sterilisation process, in combination with the quality packaging from SIG Combibloc, ensures outstanding product quality. In combisafe, the quality of the food is retained for up to two years without refrigeration and preservatives. The carton packaging is break-proof, easy to handle, and easy to open without any tools, using the complete perforation. The opened pack has no sharp edges. The product can be emptied out smoothly, right down to the last drop.” The combisafe packaging concept thus offers excellent performance in every aspect. Andrea Ferraioli continues, “In the first place, it has lots of benefits for the consumer. When it comes to food, the modern consumer seeks products that can be conveniently and easily incorporated into the individual’s personal routine, while at the same time guaranteeing high quality. In combisafe, foods are perfectly protected. Even if the contents are not used up straightaway after the carton pack has been opened, the carton top can be folded back down and the product safely stored in the refrigerator.” And from an environmental viewpoint, too, carton packaging is a plus in comparison to other packaging solutions such as glass or cans. “After it has been emptied, the carton package folds flat, and can be disposed of in a space-saving manner for recycling. All the materials in the composite from which combisafe is made can be safely recycled”, says Ferraioli. The carton composite used for combisafe consists of about 70 per cent cardboard – obtained from wood, a renewable resource – together with polypropylene and aluminium. Each of the layers has an important function in protecting the product. The inner polypropylene layer creates a liquid barrier for the product. The outer polypropylene layer protects the product from external influences and ensures that the composite material can withstand the high temperature and humidity during the autoclaving process. Cardboard and aluminium give the pack the requisite stability and protect the contents from light, external flavours and odours, as well as the direct effects of oxygen. Optimal use of shelf space Antonio Ferraioli adds, “combisafe also offers a whole array of benefits for us as the packer, and for the retail trade. On the supermarket shelf, carton packs containing products with large chunks are a novelty, something really out of the ordinary. The carton packs, with their fully printable display surfaces, are eye-catching and arouse the consumer’s interest. With respect to logistical considerations, combisafe has the advantage that considerably more carton packs can be safely stacked on a Europalette than, for example, cans. In addition, the shape of the packs allows retailers to make optimal use of shelf space.” When it came to carton packaging, the choice of SIG Combibloc as a partner was a conscious decision. As Ferraioli explains, “SIG Combibloc has many years’ experience in the field of aseptic carton packaging for food. combisafe is based on the proven sleeve system and filling machine technology of SIG Combibloc, which is characterised by its volume flexibility.“ Dr Michael Wolters, head of packaging material development and combisafe project leader at SIG Combibloc, explains, “With combisafe, the filling machine technology has been modified at the filling assembly unit. By offering the possibility of combining tried and tested pumping and pouring technologies, combisafe gives the filler an extremely flexible packaging series and the appropriate filling concept for every product. To guarantee the carton pack is securely sealed even with chunky products, with combisafe, too, the shaped cardboard sleeves are ultrasonically sealed after the filling process has taken place.” With combisafe, the sleeve system and filling machine technology of SIG Combibloc make it possible to implement a volume change and the associated product differentiation within a matter of minutes, provided the carton base section remains the same. The change of design is implemented without any interruption to the production process. Quality and cost-effectiveness La Doria, founded in 1954 by the Ferraioli’s family, is Italy’s leading manufacturer of canned vegetables. The company’s main areas of business also include the manufacture and sale of tomato products, fruit juices and drinks. In 2006, La Doria recorded sales of around 390 million Euros. La Doria specialises in private labels, and in this role is a leading supplier of international supermarkets and discount chains. The company generates about 85 per cent of its sales via this channel. In addition to its private label production, the company also manufactures products under the brand name ’La Doria’‚ which has now been active on the market for more than 50 years. With the market launch of foods in the combisafe carton pack, the company is expanding its product range. And this product concept is perfectly in line with La Doria’s company credo of offering premium-quality products at competitive prices – a credo that extends from the ongoing monitoring of the raw materials used, right up to the continuous improvement of the company’s production processes. “We see it as our duty to expand our product range for our customers in terms of quality and cost-effectiveness, and to offer them innovative concepts – including when it comes to packaging. With this in mind, our collaboration with SIG Combibloc, and our entry onto the market with combisafe, is a very promising step”, say the Ferraioli brothers.
