UNIMILK products make a big splash on the Russian market with combifitSmall plus combiSmart screw cap

May 2007. Globally, demand for convenience products is growing, and the food sector is no exception to this trend. Food products are expected to be quick and easy to eat, and they need to be easily incorporated into the consumer’s personal routine. When it comes to handling, too, consumers want practical, convenient solutions. With combifitSmall fitted with combiSmart, the screw cap for small package sizes, SIG Combibloc is responding to this demand. UNIMILK is one of the first companies to use the new packaging solution for its product. The market launch of the new pack links the expanding company with a product innovation. Under the brand name ‘Shadrinskoe’, condensed milk in a carton pack is now available on the Russian market for the first time. The product is offered in combifitSmall 300 ml.

This young, fast-growing company is a pioneering force when it comes to design and development. UNIMILK analyses the latest international trends, and promising technologies are brought on board so that the company can respond to consumer demands with intelligent product concepts, and thus expand its market share. UNIMILK currently produces more than one million tonnes of dairy products per year in Russia and the Ukraine, attaining a market share of 15 percent. UNIMILK owns 27 regional dairy firms and production facilities. The company deliberately decided to team up with SIG Combibloc. Elena Sveshnikova, Corporate Communications Manager at UNIMILK, says: “Until now, condensed milk has only been sold in cans in Russia. Offering this product in a handy, recloseable carton pack is a huge novelty here. The combination of the innovative packaging and convenient handling of combifitSmall, teamed with the combiSmart screw cap, was the critical factor in our decision to work with SIG Combibloc.“

Perfectly measured
A CFA 712 filling machine from SIG Combibloc, together with a combiSmart closure system applicator, has been installed at UNIMILK’s production plant in Yalutorovsk (Tyumen region) to fill the ‘Shadrinskoe’-brand condensed milk. ‘Shadrinskoe’ in the carton pack is being sold in Siberia, the Urals area and in Kazakhstan – where condensed milk has become a firm feature of the traditional tea-drinking ceremony. Yuri Antipov, Marketing Manager of SIG Combibloc Russia, says: “In Western Europe, condensed milk in a carton pack is very popular and is already well-established as a strong market performer. With combifitSmall with the combiSmart screw cap, we are now offering in Russia a much more attractive and more convenient packaging solution than the classic presentation form in a can. The recloseable combiSmart means the exact quantity of the product can be measured out. In this respect, our new packaging solution is also ideal, for example, for products like cream and sauces.” Against this background, the ease with which the CFA 712 filling machine and the combiSmart applicator can switch the carton format from combifitSmall to combiblocSmall, and can change the carton volume as well (200, 250, 300, 330 and 350 ml), was yet another reason for UNIMILK to opt to work with SIG Combibloc. As Elena Sveshnikova says: “In the future, we will be offering not only our ‘Shadrinskoe’ condensed milk, but also ‘Prostokvashino’-brand cream in combifitSmall 200 ml with combiSmart.”

Ideal for on-the-go
But combifitSmall with combiSmart is not just a handy kitchen aid. With this packaging solution, SIG Combibloc is responding to the growing demand for convenient products that are suitable for active lifestyles and that make it possible to comfortably consume drinks while on the go, and to close the pack in between drinks.
combiSmart is a three-part closure system with a flange, integrated cutting ring and a screw cap. The slanted top of combifitSmall and the raised, 14.3 mm flange make it easy and convenient to drink directly from the carton pack. After initial opening, the cap can be effortlessly reclosed and the carton pack securely transported.
Weighing a total of 2.36 grams, combiSmart is affixed to the already sealed carton pack by an applicator after the aseptic filling process has taken place. There is no need for pre-perforation of the carton – the cutting ring in the flange slices through the coated cardboard cleanly and effortlessly with a single twist. The wide mouth opening allows for drip-free pouring and comfortable drinking.
