combifit conquers the South-American market – new successes with innovative products January 2006. Batávia, a leading food company in Brazil, and SIG Combibloc announce a strategic partnership to bring new products in innovative packaging to the South-American market. Batávia has opted for SIG Combibloc’s packaging technology and now offers four product ranges of the renowned “Batavo” brand in combifit. The slender, elegant carton with its typical slanted top is thus for the first time available on the South-American market. “Batavo” juices and smoothies (juice and milk) as well as special milk and soy products are now being offered in 750 ml and 1,000 ml combifit carton packs. In order to be able to launch this great variety of products, Batávia has invested in the installation of a new filling line in Carambeí, state of Paraná, Brazil, which became operational in November. José Antônio do Prado Fay, General Director of Batávia: “The aim of our products is to offer consumers an added value which exactly satisfies their individual needs. We do not only target new product segments, but we are also looking for packaging solutions that meet the consumers’ demands. The beautifully shaped and handy combifit with its practical screw cap offers this added value in terms of convenience and underlines our company’s commitment to innovation.” Achim Lubbe, General Director of SIG Combibloc South America: “We will operate as a virtual factory. We will import the aseptic cartons and maintain a local emergency stock to respond to Batávia’s demand with flexibility.” Fit for Brazil The joint project promises both companies new market successes. Achim Lubbe: “Batávia has always relied on dynamic strategies and striven for innovation to launch attractive products that satisfy the needs of their target groups. SIG Combibloc’s packaging portfolio with its flexible filling machines lives perfectly up to this aspiration. Batavia especially takes advantage of the volume flexibility of our filling machines and offers its products in combifit 750 ml as well as 1,000 ml. Providing identical base sizes, a change in volume and the product differentiation resulting from this can be realised within just a few minutes.” José Antônio do Prado Fay: “We wanted to emphasise our decision to enter new markets with juice and smoothie products with an innovative packaging. combifit meets our expectations in terms of innovation, consumer friendliness and differentiation at the point of sale in every respect. The packaging is ergonomic and attractive. The spout is easy to open and reclose. The design of the packaging and, in particular, the print quality are excellent. This provides a clear added value to our newly launched product lines.” Regina Boschini, Marketing Manager of Batávia, explains that the selection of combifit was specifically important in case of the launch of smoothies. “We want to promote the smoothies concept in Brazil. In other countries, it is already very well known and regarded as an evolution in the juice category with the added value of being healthy. Smoothies are refreshing, low-calorie drinks mixing fruit juice with milk. For the launch, we needed suitable packaging that followed the product’s innovation; and this is what we found in combifit: modernity and functionality.” Another new Batavo product that uses combifit is the Sensy line. It is a special milk grade with 90 percent less lactose that benefits consumers with lactose ingestion. The Sensy products are rich in animal proteins and provide extra calcium. Batávia moreover uses combifit to enter the soy food products market. “Juices + Soy Batavo” is the name of the new non-lactose product line without cholesterol. The new beverage is 100 percent vegetable and contains less than 100 calories/200 ml. “Batávia’s interest in this market is justified by its impressive projected growth rate of 12 percent a year. The sector of food based on soy amounts to US$ 33 million annually in Brazil,” summarises the Marketing Manager, Regina Boschini. In addition, Batávia will use the 1 litre combifit for its traditional Choco Milk – a very popular product that has been on the Brazilian market for more than 50 years.
