Successful company history

SIG Combibloc celebrates an anniversary and the completion of a new packaging plant in Wittenberg
Wittenberg. Another SIG Combibloc packaging plant has started operation in Wittenberg. With this investment, the Wittenberg-based company is well on the way to becoming a high-performance plant for medium and large-sized beverage cartons. Coupled with its tenth anniversary, this gave the company two good reasons to celebrate.

An open day held recently allowed people to have a look "behind the scenes" at SIG Combibloc and to experience production of the aseptic carton packs for liquid and pasty food products themselves. SIG Combibloc is a world leader in the packaging industry. As a system supplier, the company develops and produces both the carton packs and the corresponding filling machines. Various regional companies serve the markets in Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Strategically positioned
SIG Combibloc GmbH which has its headquarters in Linnich is responsible for Western Europe, South America, the Middle East and Africa. When the three existing packaging plants in Linnich reached their capacity limits in 1990/1991, a decision was made to construct a new production plant. Following indepth investigations and the inspection of various sites, the SIG group management decided in favour of Wittenberg as an additional production location in order to position itself strategically for the new markets in the East.

The contract of sale for the site in the newly opened Apollensdorf industrial park was signed in 1992 and one of the most modern packaging plants of the SIG Combibloc Group worldwide was constructed here in just one year. Production started with 130 employees in January 1994. First of all, only 1-litre beverage cartons were produced. Later small, medium and large-sized cartons were added to the range. Some 13 billion combibloc beverage cartons have been manufactured in Wittenberg to date.

In order to cover the growing worldwide demand for beverage cartons, the production structures are being optimised even further. The construction of the fifth SIG Combibloc packaging plant in Germany started in Wittenberg in November 2003. The first construction phase has already been completed. A final packaging line which stamps and seals coated and printed packaging materials is in place and has already started operation.

A second construction phase which will immediately follow on from the first one will provide space for additional printing machines. This building and the installation of a first printing machine will be completed by mid-2005. The start of operation of the printing machine and a further final packaging line is planned for the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2005. Some 50 million euros in all will be invested in enlarging the plant.

SIG Combibloc will probably employ 350 people in the Wittenberg packaging plant in the near future.
