SIG Combibloc presents a new screw cap for beverage cartons January 2006: SIG Combibloc has launched a new screw cap. CombiSwift is a lightweight screw cap designed to enhance the convenience offered by the company’s aseptic beverage cartons. The combiSwift opening mechanism is based on a new technology. The three-part screw cap is applied to an overcoated hole - a procedure that allows to open the screw cap easily. For this purpose, precise holes are punched into the carton before the raw carton is coated with aluminium or polyethylene in the packaging plant. Once the cartons have been filled at the customer’s plant, combiSwift is applied to the overcoated hole. combiSwift consists of a flange with an integrated cutting ring and a cap. A single twist is all it takes for the cutting ring to cut through the extremely thin aluminium and polyethylene layers easily and precisely. Easy opening combiSwift consists of a flange with an integrated cutting ring and a cap. A single twist is all it takes for the cutting ring to cut through the extremely thin aluminium and polyethylene layers easily and precisely. This handling is a decisive advantage for consumers. Comprehensive handling tests and consumer studies have confirmed the easy and convenient opening procedure resulting from the fact that the carton layer is already punshed and only the thin aluminium and polyethylene layers need to be punched through. “The clean pouring hole of the opening mechanism provides for even pouring,” explains Karina Daenekamp, Product Manager Opening Systems at SIG Combibloc. combiSwift is equipped with tamper evidence feature that reveals at first glance whether the original closing of the packaging is intact or not. To re-close, the cap is screwed on again, ensuring tightness. “We have developed combiSwift as a closure that is suitable for a broad range of products,” says Karina Daenekamp. With an interior diameter of 18 mm, combiSwift is a convenient, flat closure system for liquid milk products as well as for fruit juices and other non-carbonated drinks. combiSwift will be available in various colours, so that it can be matched to various packaging designs. combiSwift can be applied using the proven ACB applicators for combibloc formats and ACF applicators for combibloc and combifit formats. “This means that combiSwift is not only an attractive solution for new customers,” explains Karina Daenekamp. Companies already using closures from SIG Combibloc can use the existing systems for the application of combiSwift, too - after a simple, quick and low-cost modification ensuring continued efficiency of the filling line. SIG Combibloc has launched a new screw cap on the market. combiSwift is a lightweight screw cap for the aseptic beverage carton that meets high standards in terms of quality and convenience. Milchwerke Thüringen GmbH, a subsidiary of the Humana Milchunion group, is the world’s first supplier to use the benefits of combiSwift. The company’s Osterland brand long-life full-cream milk (3.5 percent), the low-fat long-life milk (1.5 percent) and the skimmed long-life milk (0.5 percent) have been equipped with the convenient combiSwift screw cap and are now available in the market. Already today, the Osterland brand is a synonym of quality and product variety for consumers in Thuringia and Saxony. According to a study, about 90 percent of Thuringians know the Osterland brand. One in two buys an Osterland product at least once a month. “We want to offer high-quality products at an affordable price, and we make the same demands on the packaging solutions we use. Choosing combiblocSlimline in connection with combiSwift is a consistent decision enabling us to offer convenience at a reasonable price,” explains Rolf Janshen. “All components of the aseptic beverage carton including the closure made from high-quality plastic are environmentally friendly and can be recycled. This is another quality feature meeting our demands. SIG Combibloc is a partner that has a lot of experience in the field of closures and opening solutions - this expertise is something that pays off when it comes to the launch of combiSwift,” says Rolf Janshen. In 1993, SIG Combibloc introduced combiTop, the world’s first closure for the beverage carton - an innovation that soon convinced the consumer. Additional closure innovations that followed were combiLift and combiTwist. Market research and consumer studies have shown that today’s consumers attach importance to easy opening, even pouring, tight re-closure that ensures protection against external influences and safe transport even after initial opening. “combiSwift meets all of these quality criteria,” says closure expert Daenekamp. The experience made with the pilot customer met all expectations - Humana Milchunion group now considers to adopt this technology also for other products. Comprehensive handling tests and consumer studies have confirmed the easy and convenient opening procedure resulting from the fact that the carton layer is already punshed so that only the thin aluminium and polyethylene layers need to be punched through. It also ensures that the product does not get into contact with the carton - a feature that is highly appreciated by end consumers for hygienic reasons.
