10 years of SIG Combibloc in Spain January 2005. 10 years of SIG Combibloc S.A. – this anniversary was recently celebrated by the Spanish subsidiary of packaging specialist SIG Combibloc. SIG Combibloc S.A. which is currently based in Alcobendas near Madrid started operation in 1994 although business relations with Spain had been set up before this. For instance, the first SIG Combibloc filling machine was sold to Nestlé Spain in 1986. And the foundations for business relations with major Spanish customers such as Leche Celta were laid at the end of the eighties. Under the leadership of managing director Wolfgang Stamm, 48 employees work in the SIG Combibloc subsidiary today. Located just outside Madrid, it serves the Spanish and Portuguese market. Brand-conscious Spaniards The Spanish market is governed by brand products. Spanish consumers are brand-conscious because they associate quality with these products. In Spain, closure systems are an importance sign for quality. Almost all leading brand manufacturers sell their products with reclosable opening aids. Market studies have shown that they play a major role in the consumer's decision to buy, and that consumers equate the lack of a closure system with a lack of convenience and lower product quality. An average household in Spain is considerably larger than in other European countries. Almost half of the Spaniards live in households of four and more people. This explains the success of the large 1.5 and 2-litre cartons. At the same time, Spaniards spend an above-average proportion of their time outside their homes. This promotes the growth of single-serve packs. Steady growth The Spanish market for aseptic carton packs has recorded a steady growth in recent years. The market share of aseptic beverage cartons will most likely increase from 54 percent (2003) to some 57 percent in the year 2007. SIG Combibloc currently has a market share of some 21 percent (2003). The Spaniards are record milk-drinkers, consuming 115 litres of milk and milk products on average per person and year. The Spanish milk market is a UHT market with a market share of 98 percent. Fresh milk plays only a subordinate role. Food and "added value" products constitute a future market for SIG Combibloc in Spain. Tomato products and some UHT desserts are already firmly established carton-packed products in the food sector. However, more and more new segments are being opened up, for instance sauces, soups and baby food. Major customers of SIG Combibloc Spain are Leche Celta, CAPSA Lactimilk and Lence in the milk segment, J. García Carríon, Juver, Hero, Capel, Grupo Solis Vintners, Agrozumos and Interfruit in the wine and fruit drinks segments, as well as Nestlé España, Unilever Foods España, ILAS and Gallina Blanca in the food segment.
