Why employee surveys matter

Employee engagement isn’t just about satisfaction — it’s about connection, purpose, and the shared commitment to building something better together. Across industries, engagement surveys are becoming more than an HR tool — they’re a business essential. They give people a voice, give leaders direction, and give organizations the insight they need to grow stronger.

Why employee engagement matters

“Companies with highly engaged workforces are 21% more profitable.”

Gallup – State of the American Workplace

“Only 23% of employees worldwide are engaged at work.”

Gallup – State of the Global Workplace 2023

“Engaged employees are more productive, safer, and stay longer.”

Gallup – Q12 Meta-Analysis

“70% of the variance in team engagement is determined solely by the manager.”

Gallup – It’s the Manager

Where did it come from?

Employee engagement as a concept began gaining traction in the 1990s, but the real shift came when organizations moved from annual satisfaction surveys to more dynamic, feedback-driven engagement tools. These newer surveys don’t just measure how people feel — they capture what drives them, what holds them back, and where opportunity lives.

More importantly, engagement surveys have become a vital tool in shaping culture and strategy. The best companies use them not just to listen, but to act.

The benefits of employee engagement surveys

Surveys empower employees to share what’s working — and what needs to change. When designed well and followed by real action, surveys lead to:

  • Improved trust and transparency
  • More focused leadership development
  • Stronger alignment between teams and strategy
  • Higher morale, retention, and performance

At SIG, we see our engagement surveys as more than a pulse check. They are part of a continuous listening strategy — one that allows us to stay connected, stay curious, and stay accountable.

What we currently do:
  • Partner with WTW – As a trusted third-party provider, WTW helps us design and deliver surveys that are reliable, benchmarked, and data-rich — giving us meaningful comparisons across industries and regions.
  • Simplified survey experience – We’ve made our engagement surveys easy to access, simple to complete, and fully confidential — because honest feedback starts with psychological safety.
  • Insight-driven action – Results don’t sit in reports. They’re the basis for workshops, team discussions, and targeted actions across all levels of the business.
  • Transparent communication – We share both our strengths and opportunities openly, because we believe progress starts with shared awareness and ownership.

SIG’s 2025 sustainable engagement results: A Snapshot

We’re proud to share that in our 2025 Employee Survey, conducted in partnership with WTW:

  • Sustainable engagement score: 86%
  • Participation rate: 84%

Employees reported high levels of belief in SIG’s goals, pride in working here, and a strong commitment to going above and beyond — all of which continue to exceed industry benchmarks. We've also identified areas where we can further improve, including enhancing non-monetary recognition, work equipment and resources.

What’s next for engagement at SIG?

We’re already turning insights into action. Managers and regional leaders are engaging with their teams to reflect on results and define meaningful next steps. We’re also continuing to invest in areas where we can grow further.

At SIG, engagement isn’t just something we measure. It’s something we build — every day, together.

The importance of psychological safety in fostering an open and inclusive work environment

Psychological safety is a critical factor in creating an open and inclusive work environment. It is the shared belief within a team that individuals can express themselves, take risks, and speak up without fear of negative consequences such as embarrassment, rejection, or punishment.
