We believe in more for people and the planet

Together, we are calling for action to tackle climate change with a global campaign led by our SIG Way Beyond Good Champions. Check out our interview with Amanda Wickenhagen, Transformation & Change Specialist at SIG who speaks about what SIG employees around the world are doing.
What is Way Beyond Good?
Way Beyond Good is all about SIG contributing more to society and the environment than we take out as a company and as individuals. It’s our roadmap to becoming a net positive business, but it’s also an attitude that everyone at SIG shares. We believe in more for people and the planet.
What is your role in the Way Beyond Good Initiative?
I help coordinate SIG’s global network of Way Beyond Good Champions – colleagues in all our major locations who organise activities and events that raise awareness of sustainability and help us engage with our local communities. I do this alongside my job as a transformation and change specialist in HR.
What attracted you to the role?
I think everyone’s actions, no matter how small, can contribute to creating a better world. By working with the Way Beyond Good Champions, we can help other people make a positive impact. With more collaboration I believe we can solve global sustainability issues like climate change.

Tell us more about the Champions network
The Champions are a network of employee volunteers in all SIG’s major offices and plants who are ambassadors for Way Beyond Good. They engage colleagues on sustainability topics, such as climate change, by organising activities and events in their location, often with the local community. It’s very rewarding working with the Champions and seeing the amazing work they do.
Can everyone at SIG get involved?
Yes, absolutely! Activities range from quizzes, to webinars, to planting trees, to cooking meals for the local community – so there is something for everyone. We believe that everyone can contribute to achieving more for people and the planet.
What have the Champions been doing recently?
For the last few months, the Champions have been busy with our global campaign about climate change. In Romania, the Champions held a quiz so colleagues could have fun while learning more about climate change. The Way Beyond Good team in Brazil organised six weeks of challenges, where teams of colleagues competed to earn the most points by answering quiz questions, reading information about climate change, and completing climate-friendly activities. All the points were converted to donations for organisations distributing food to families impacted by COVID-19. In Germany and Austria, they published fun riddles and helpful tips weekly about how every person can have a positive impact on climate change. In Mexico, the Champion started an urban garden project where colleagues could grow their own vegetables at home. And many more activities have been happening all over the world!
What has been the most popular activity in the Climate Campaign?
Many Champions chose to organise a game of ‘Climate Bingo’ as part of their campaign. SIG employees in Middle East and Africa (MEA), Australia, Switzerland, and Thailand, all had the chance to join in with the bingo in their location. In MEA, colleagues used the bingo card to show which activities they have been doing to reduce their carbon footprint. Thirty cards were submitted, and five winners were selected. The winners each received a Fitbit to track their daily activity. In Thailand, the Champions asked colleagues to share a photo of themselves doing a climate-friendly activity like cycling to work or using a reusable cup. It was a big success, and they received more than 400 photos!
Is there a recent event where many SIG employees have contributed globally?
I recently helped to organise a global event called The Glasgow Challenge as part of the Climate Campaign. We asked employees around the world to leave the car at home and to track the distance they travel on foot and by bike. The goal is to collectively travel the distance around the world, ending at the location of the UN climate change conference which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, this November. We’ve surpassed our goal of 51,823 km, with a global total so far of 55,000 km – and we’re still going! So many employees around the world have participated, all contributing to our shared goal. It really shows that when we work together, we can achieve amazing things.
