SIG expanded the alu-layer-free option into the juice category and a multi-serve format. ALDI Germany offered grape juice under its own brand Rio d'oro in this innovative packaging solution – reducing the carbon footprint of conventional multi-serve cartons by 29%3.

February 2024 saw SIG hit another important milestone in the company’s aluminum-layer-free journey and achieve another first for the industry, as the 3rd billionth SIG aseptic carton pack using packaging material without an aluminum layer is delivered for use in the European dairy industry.

Prestigious award for our innovation

SIG’s groundbreaking SIG Terra Alu-free Full barrier, the world’s first full barrier packaging material without aluminum layer for aseptic carton packs, has won Packaging Europe’s prestigious Sustainability Award 2023 in the ‘Climate’ category.

Mengniu blends impact & innovation

Mengniu, China’s second-largest dairy producer, chose to go alu-layer-free for its unique yogurt drinks brand Zhenguoli. This milestone brought together two of SIG’s leading innovations – SIG Terra for reduced environmental impact and SIG Drinksplus for added texture  – offering a unique product experience. 

Polands first aluminum layer free pack

In 2022, Popular dairy producer OSM Łowicz, one of Poland’s sustainability leaders, was the first in the country to opt for SIG Terra Alu-free packaging material and first in the world in the cooking cream category.

New, sustainable impulse

Gmundner Dairy, the third largest dairy in Austria, was the first company in the region to offer SIG Terra Alu-free aseptic carton packs. From May 2023, its premium milk under the Gmundner Milch brand is filled in SIG MidiBloc 1,000 ml carton packs without an aluminum layer.

Green Packaging Star Award

In 2024, SIG has won the coveted Green Packaging Star Award for its pioneering SIG Terra MidiBloc Alu-free packaging solution. The annual Austrian Green Packaging Star Award has been recognizing the most sustainable packaging innovations for nearly 20 years.

Yili with strong commitment

Yili Group, China’s largest dairy producer, was the first to adopt SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier for its flagship Satine Pure Milk and supported its Green Asian Games commitment. The launch was soon followed by additional products and answered rising consumer demand for more environmentally responsible packaging – made possible with SIG Terra. 

1 billionth alu-layer-free pack filled

Already in March 2020, the 1 billionth SIG Terra Alu-free pack was filled by DMK Group, Germany’s largest dairy cooperative. As an early adopter of aluminum layer free aseptic packaging, DMK Group has played a decisive role in the success story of this low-carbon solution for the dairy market.

Design for Circularity award

SIG Terra Alu-free + Full Barrier has earned the Design for Circularity award of the 4evergreen Alliance ‘Circularity Success Stories’ initiative. 4evergreen is a cross-industry alliance of over 100 members representing the entire lifecycle of fiber-based packaging – from forests to producers, designers, brand owners and recyclers.
