We at SIG meet Beth Thomas

From temporary worker to leading production at the world’s largest Bag-in-Box site of SIG, Beth Thomas has grown with Chilhowie (CHL) every step of the way. Here’s her story.
What brought you to SIG, and what has kept you here?

I started at SIG as a temporary employee and was hired full time just six months later. Since then, I’ve moved through roles in packing, machine operation, quality, leadership, HR, and now production management. What’s kept me here? It’s the people and the sense of belonging. We’re a tight-knit team, and even as we’ve grown, that family-like atmosphere has never gone away.

Can you share a proud moment from your time at Chilhowie?

There are so many, but what stands out is seeing our team come together—whether it’s to deliver a big project, run a successful food drive, or support a coworker in need. I also take pride in watching team members grow into new roles. Since I became Production Manager, I’ve seen several leads and supervisors move into new departments. That’s the most rewarding part of leadership.

How have you seen the site—and Bag-in-Box technology—evolve?

When I started 25 years ago, we had four ABMs, two dipstrip extruders, a combiner, and one customer: Coca-Cola. We worked five days a week, 8-hour shifts, and had around 100 people. Now? We’re a 24/7 operation with over 300 employees and a global customer base. The scale and complexity have grown dramatically—and so has our capability.

Who at SIG has inspired or mentored you along the way?

I’ve been lucky to have several mentors. Gil Graham, who was Plant Manager when I was an operator, encouraged me to further my education and supported my move into leadership. Greg Payne has been a long-time mentor too—he helped me develop as a Mini Business trainer and guided me through Kaizen and Kata projects. Their belief in me made a huge difference.

What does the CHW team spirit mean to you?

It means everyone stepping up, no matter what department you’re in. It’s rolling up your sleeves and saying, “Let’s get it done.” That’s CHIL-HOW-WE-DO-IT.

If you had one message for the next generation at CHL, what would it be?

Take every opportunity to learn and grow. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone—it’s how you get better. And most importantly, support one another. That’s what makes this place special.
