Smart choice

A smart choice for your family. A smart choice for the planet, with packaging made from renewable, responsibly sourced materials.

See how carton packaging offers convenience and value while using renewable materials and supporting responsible forestry.

Packaging matters

When it comes to grocery shopping, among all the many choices you have to make, you may be wondering if the type of packaging your foods and drinks come in really matters. Yes, it does.

Every time you choose carton packaging at the store, you’re making a smart choice for your family and for our planet. Why? Because cartons are specially designed to offer convenience and value in a package that mainly consists of renewable and responsibly sourced raw materials and that is recyclable by design.

Offering the ultimate convenience

Whether you’re on the go or settled in at home, carton packaging offers the ultimate convenience. With easy to open and resealable closures, it keeps your food and beverages fresh for longer. Now, that’s a convenient and smart choice.

  • easy to carry
  • easy to open
  • easy to store

Protecting the foods and beverages you and your family love

With carton packaging, your favorite foods and beverages last longer without preservatives and many of them don’t need to be refrigerated before they’re opened, staying fresh for longer.

  • longer nutritional value
  • minimizing food waste
  • cost saving
In fact, a 1 liter SIG beverage carton is comprised of just 3% packaging and 97% of the product inside that you eat or drink.*

Packaging solutions for better

Carton packaging is designed to use minimal materials, most of which are renewable (~75%). The packaging is made primarily from paper, with a thin layer of plastic that keeps moisture out and protects what’s inside.

Some carton packages also contain a very thin layer of aluminum, which is about six times thinner than human hair, to protect the contents from light and oxygen. No sacrifice on safety or quality, and thus, a smart choice.

  • safety and quality
  • high percentage of renewable materials
  • recyclability by design

Recycling gives old cartons new life

Carton packaging is recyclable by design and the paperboard, aluminum and plastic it’s made from gets turned into new products every day. That means you can give your family’s milk or soup carton new life as anything from corrugated boxes to ceiling tiles, if a recycling infrastructure exists in your community.

  • less waste going to the landfills
  • lower need for new resources
  • contributing to a circular economy

Make a better world, one carton at a time.

Behind each carton package from SIG, you’ll find a world of innovation that delivers a smart choice for both your family and the environment. Why? Because sustainability is at the center of everything we do:

  • High share of renewable materials
  • Responsibly sourced, FSC™-certified paperboard**
  • Responsibly sourced, ASI-certified aluminium
  • Production of packs with 100% renewable electricity
Product safety and quality, as well as environmental management are essential requirements for us to satisfy the needs of our customers from around the world.

Certified to the highest standards

FSC

Renewable, plant-based paperboard makes up around 75% of our carton packaging on average. We buy 100% of the paperboard used in our cartons with FSC™ Mix certification**. The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) sets strict criteria for managing forests responsibly, guaranteeing species protection, and respecting local communities and indigenous peoples. So, when you buy a carton with an FSC™ label, you can feel good knowing you’re helping protect the world’s forests.

ISCC

We always strive to make our products even better. We offer the option to link the polymers used for the closure and the lamination of the paperboard to wood residues from paper-making through a mass-balance system, independently certified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification). International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a global certification group that certifies our processes and use of renewable plant-based plastics. This ensures transparency and gives you the confidence that we’re continually enhancing the sustainability of our packaging innovations.

ASI

We want our carton packaging that uses an ultra-thin layer of aluminum to protect the contents from light and oxygen to be the most responsible it can be. SIG is purchasing 100% of the aluminum for aseptic carton packs with certification to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) standards globally.

We're in this together.

Companies that make responsible carton packaging and the food and beverage manufacturers that use them for their products represent an important first step.

But they can’t do it alone. They need your help.

To complete the circle, choose carton packaging at the store and then recycle it when you’re done if a recycling infrastructure exist in your community.

Together, we can make a smart choice.
