70 Years of Bag-in-Box - Invented for better – Meet Elizabeth Chacko

45 years of dedication – still going strong
We at SIG
 series

Even after 45 years of service Elizabeth Chacko keeps showing up with pride, purpose, and a smile - entirely by choice. Her story is not just about longevity, but about love for her work, her team, and the community she’s helped shape over nearly five decades at the SIG Northlake plant.

Please introduce yourself and mention how long you’ve worked in Bag-in-Box at SIG.
My name is Elizabeth Chacko, and I work as a Fitments Operator at our Northlake plant. I joined the company in 1979 — back when it was still known as Scholle Packaging — and I’ve been here for 45 years. I’ve seen the plant grow, the company evolve, and many people come and go, but for me, SIG has always been home. Even now, I choose to come in every day because I truly enjoy what I do and who I do it with.

What originally brought you to this part of the business?
I moved to Chicago in 1979, and like many newcomers, I was trying to find stable work to support myself. A good friend of mine told me that Scholle was a good company with good people — and encouraged me to apply. I got the job, and what was meant to be temporary turned into something much more meaningful. I never expected to stay this long, but I fell in love with the environment, the people, and the sense of purpose the work gave me.

What makes working in flexible packaging exciting or unique?
What makes this job special for me isn’t just the products — it’s the people. Over the years, I’ve worked with so many colleagues and managers who have treated me with kindness and respect. I always felt like I belonged. I admire the way our team looks out for one another, and I’m especially thankful for how much care is taken to support every employee — no matter their background or age. It’s rare to find a place where people still value humility, responsibility, and hard work, and I’m proud to say I found that here.

What’s one challenge you’ve helped solve over the years?
I’ve always tried to support the plant by encouraging teamwork and helping make sure we meet our goals and deadlines. I know how important it is to get orders completed correctly and on time, and I’ve always tried to set an example — by being reliable, by doing my part with care, and by encouraging my co-workers to be proud of the work they do. Even small things, like sharing advice or helping a colleague stay focused, can make a difference.

What’s a proud moment from your time here?
One of the things that makes me proudest is how many people here — at every level — know me by name, say hello, and treat me with genuine warmth and respect. To be recognized after all these years, and to feel appreciated and loved, means the world to me. My relationships with my colleagues are what keep me going. I may be the oldest in the plant, but I feel just as much a part of the team as ever.

How has the business evolved — and what’s stayed the same?
A lot has changed, of course — new technologies, new generations, and new ways of working. Sometimes I notice a difference in work ethic from one generation to another, but that’s just part of change. What hasn’t changed is the fast-paced environment, the sense of urgency, and the dedication it takes to do the job well. We’re still a company that moves with purpose, and that’s something I admire.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this space?
It’s simple: follow the rules, be respectful, and do your best. Show up every day ready to work, and take pride in what you do — no matter what your role is. If you give your best, the company will support you. I truly believe that. SIG has taken care of me, and in return, I’ve always tried to give my best effort, every day.

Anything else you'd like to share about your journey?
What continues to impress me is the cleanliness and organization of the plant. It shows that we care — about our work, our safety, and our people. Even after all these years, I still recommend SIG to others. I tell them, “This is a good place to be.”

I’m grateful to have spent most of my life here, and as long as I can still contribute — I’m happy to keep going. I’m proud of my 45 years at SIG, and I hope my story reminds others that with the right people around you, work doesn’t have to feel like work. I still wake up looking forward to the day. As long as I can contribute, I will. SIG has been more than a workplace — it’s been my second home.
