Forests are essential to climate stability, biodiversity, and community livelihoods. WWF’s newly published Forests Forward Impact Report highlights the collective achievements of 26 partner companies across nine sectors — from packaging and manufacturing to retail and forestry. Together, these companies are helping conserve over 1.3 million hectares of forests and improving management across an additional 2.7 million hectares.
As a long-standing partner of WWF, SIG plays an active role in Forests Forward — not only by sourcing responsibly but by investing in forest restoration and conservation initiatives in some of the world’s most vital and vulnerable landscapes. This collaboration reflects our broader ambition to contribute to nature-positive outcomes through scalable, community-centered action.
For many years, SIG has committed to sourcing 100% of its paperboard as FSCTM-certified (FSCTM trademark licence code: FSCTM C020428), ensuring that our raw materials come from responsibly managed forests and other controlled sources. But we knew that wasn't enough. We wanted to go further — and deeper.
“We turned to WWF to work with us to go beyond our achievement of sourcing 100% of our paperboard responsibly as FSC-certified.” said Samuel Sigrist, SIG’s CEO. “Our partnership with WWF has unlocked huge potential for SIG to create positive impacts for at-risk forests and local communities globally. We want to show others how they can contribute best to supporting thriving forests by investing in landscapes.”
Through Forests Forward, SIG is investing in nature-based solutions that deliver lasting impact beyond our supply chain.
Spotlight on Mexico: Restoring forests and protecting jaguars
One of the most powerful examples of our collaboration with WWF is underway in Mexico, where we are supporting efforts to:
- Restore 750 hectares of critical forest corridors to help safeguard jaguar habitats
- Improve forest management practices across 100,000 hectares in collaboration with local communities
- Reduce human-wildlife conflict, strengthening coexistence between biodiversity and livelihoods
This work is part of a broader strategy to restore key tropical landscapes and make forests more resilient to the effects of climate change — while respecting the role of Indigenous knowledge and community-led conservation.
From commitment to collective action
As part of Forests Forward, SIG joins other global partners in helping to fill the finance gap for forest conservation and drive systemic change in forest-risk sectors. Together, we are:
- Financing forest landscape restoration in critical ecosystems across Latin America and Southeast Asia
- Supporting smallholder farmers and communities to achieve FSCTM certification and gain sustainable livelihoods
- Co-developing tools for responsible sourcing, traceability, and supplier engagement
WWF’s report makes one thing clear: voluntary action from the private sector is no longer just “nice to have” — it’s essential. With over half the world’s forests managed for production, businesses play a decisive role in reversing forest loss and advancing climate and nature goals.
What’s next?
Looking ahead to 2030, SIG will continue to strengthen its impact through nature-positive action. We are exploring additional ways to expand our landscape-level partnerships and deepen supply chain collaboration with suppliers and customers. We believe that what’s good for nature is good for business — and that thriving forests are key to a thriving future.
