SIGers on the move - meet Jean de Melo

Current location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
SIG journey: Started as Automation Specialist in Brazil → Now supporting quality control systems at the Riyadh plant as Reliability Improvement Expert
Please introduce yourself and your role at SIG.
My name is Jean de Melo. I'm originally from Brazil, married, and the proud father of an 8-year-old boy.
I began my journey with SIG in 2015 in Brazil as an Automation Specialist, focused on improving quality control systems. Over the past 10 years, I’ve contributed to SIG’s growth by helping develop and supply technology that ensures the quality of our packaging solutions. Today, I’m based in Riyadh, supporting the team here with the same mission.
What’s the most rewarding part of working in a different country?
It’s incredibly gratifying to feel your work is recognized not only in your home country, but also in a completely different cultural context. The trust I’ve received from my colleagues at the Riyadh plant drives me to keep giving my best, no matter where I am in the world.
How has SIG’s global culture helped you adapt?
SIG’s global culture has played a big part in making this transition easier. Working in such a collaborative and inclusive environment has broadened my perspective and helped me understand different working styles. The support I’ve received from across locations has helped me feel part of something bigger — and that makes all the difference.
What’s your top advice for colleagues considering global mobility?
Embrace the opportunity with curiosity and an open mind. Relocating isn’t always easy — there will be challenges — but the personal and professional growth is more than worth it. Be patient, take time to learn the local culture, and don’t hesitate to ask for support. And remember, building relationships with your new team is key — it’s those connections that will help you feel grounded and motivated.
What has surprised you the most about living and working abroad?
Before moving, I had many doubts — especially about cultural differences and how I’d be accepted. But from the very beginning, I was warmly welcomed. The hospitality and openness I’ve experienced here in Saudi Arabia truly impressed me, and it made the whole transition much smoother than I expected.
How has this experience contributed to your personal or professional growth?
This experience has been transformational. Personally, it’s given me a deeper appreciation for diversity and helped me grow more adaptable and resilient. Professionally, it’s expanded my ability to work across cultures and solve problems in new environments. I’ve become more confident, empathetic, and resourceful — and I know these skills will stay with me wherever my career at SIG takes me next.
